hirad - biogas for energy saves time, saves money, generates energy

Hirad Energy Farm

The Hirad Energy Farm is a system developed from traditional Anaerobic Digestion Technology simplified and improved by HIRAD using rapid rate anaerobic digestion. It is a bespoke system that converts cow slurry into electricity and fertiliser.

The system is quick, converting a day's slurry production within a day. It is typically installed to the farm’s existing storage facilities giving minimal disruption. Unlike old style AD systems, it does not require an energy crop or external waste streams and its outputs all have a value. The gas produced is used to produce electricity, the solid waste is composted and used as a soil treatment (or sold) and the liquid is a premium fertiliser.

cows go moo

200 Dairy cows produce approx 30m³ of slurry per day, which will produce 8.75m³ bio gas per hour and this will in turn produce 15KW of electricity per hour. That equates to more than £14,000 per year of electricity (at current prices).

As the process just removes the volatile compounds (the ones that produce the green house gases) the nitrates that the farmer wants are left in the liquid. Producing a fertiliser that is much safer to store and spread.

The most important difference between the Hirad Energy Farm and all other slurry AD systems, is the price.

Typically an old style AD system will cost anywhere between £750,000 and £1m. It will require a large civil engineering project to install it and a lot of on going maintenance. The Hirad system is modular, infinitely scalable and requires minimal maintenance. A system to process slurry from a 200 head herd will cost in the region of £70,000.

Hirad also takes care of all the electricity production and the sale of that electricity. In the majority of cases the system will produce twice as much electricity as the farm uses.
